The UX Express

If you’ve been in the IT/Software Development world in the last 3-5 years then you’ve probably heard the buzzword “UX” [User Experience] a time or two. It’s popularity has grown exponentially over the last few years. Along with that growth, there is also a bit of confusion and misconception around the purpose & value of UX. So with that in mind, let’s define UX.

UX / User Experience

User Experience encompasses all aspects of the end-user’s interaction with the company, its services and its products.

To take it a step further let’s also define UX’s value to a business / organization.

UX’s Value

To drive the creation of products and services that delight customers because they are useful, usable, effective, efficient, desirable, and differentiated.

So let’s dig a little bit deeper and map out the UX process that we use here at QDivision.

We operate under the following iterative, User-Centered Design process:

  • Define
    • In the beginning stages of the process it’s important to define the targeted audience (users), as well as the problems that the product and/or service will potentially solve.
  • Ideate
    • Once those two things have been defined we move into the design ideation phase which is all about sketching, wireframing and designing potential solutions to those problems that are specifically designed for our users.
  • Prototype
    • These ideations are then narrowed down into the versions that can provide the largest value in the shortest amount of time and then built into functional prototypes that can be tested by our users.
  • Test
    • Up until this point we are working mostly on assumptions & hypothesis but now we should be at the point where we are able to test and validate the prototype that we’ve built with our users! This is the point in the process where we are able to validate our prototype.
  • Deliver
    • Once the prototype has been tested and validated, it’s now time to move into the agile world and start working on developing and launching our MVP!

A few things to highlight:

  • We get a functional prototype into the hands of actual users A.S.A.P.!
  • Collaboration is a necessity: this process is done involving designers, product owners, developers, users, business stakeholders.
  • We focus on our users and solving problems at a high level of excellence: eventually the other details just work themselves out.

As we follow this process it has enabled us interact and collaborate with our user groups like never before, rapidly build innovative prototypes that solve problems and craft user experiences that make a difference.
